1. How do I use Microsoft
Internet Connection Sharing (ICS Windows '98) Access Manager?
1) Install A.M.
Note: Make sure you also follow the steps
for setting up a VPN (question 5), this is also needed for A.M. and
ICS to coexist.
2) Add the Internet Connection Sharing
(ICS) software on your gateway machine (the computer that will connect
and share your Internet connection to the client systems (other computers).
3) You do this by clicking "start
-> settings -> control panel ->Add/Remove Programs".
4) Then "windows setup".
5) Under "components tab",
double-click on the "Internet tools" category.
6) Check the "Internet connection
sharing" and click on "OK" to install.
Note: You will need to go step by step
through the Internet sharing setup until it asks the kind of connection.
Choose the option for "cable or dsl".
7) Continue and it will prompt you for
the device. Select the "Network TeleSystems P.P.P.o.E. Adapter".
(If using an older version of Access Manager you might see "Sympatico
High Speed Edition Adapter" instead.)
8) You will then be prompted to make a setup disk for the client machines.
9) You will be asked to restart.
10) Install the setup disk on the client machines.
11) On the gateway system, start a connection and then use the ICS application
on the shared systems. You will be updated with new private addresses.
At this point you should be connected.
Note: It has been brought to my attention
that Win98SE ICS has yet another MTU key in the registry on the gateway
that needs to be adjusted in order to allow a PPPoE to be shared correctly.
It is found as follows;
Hkey_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\
Services\ICSharing\Settings\General\InternetMTU

The newest release of EnterNet 300 V1.3 (March 11, 2000) adjusts MTU
values to 1454 so MTU adjustments are no longer needed.
2. How do I use Microsoft
Internet Connection Sharing (ICS Windows 2000) with Access Manager?
1) Install a 2nd Ethernet adapter for
your private LAN and reboot.
2) Connect the newly installed Ethernet card to your Ethernet hub.
3) Right click on "My Network Places".
4) Choose "Properties".
5) Choose the local area connection that is associated with your PPPoE
adapter.
6) Right click on it and choose
"Properties".
7) Choose the "Sharing" tab.
8) Check off "Enable Internet Connection Sharing".
9) Click on the drop down arrow in the "For local network:"
box.
10) Choose the Ethernet adapter
associated with your private network.
Note: This will automatically
assign the address 192.168.0.1 to the private network gateway and
enable DHCP.
11) To use the shared connection,
connect the private network hosts to the Ethernet hub.
Note: Hosts on the private
network should have their TCP/IP set to use DHCP.
3. What is the Dial on
Demand Feature?
Access Manager is compatible with the Windows
Connection Wizard. This means applications that are "Internet aware"
and are thus able to use Windows Connection Wizard to establish an on-demand
Internet connection will be able to do so through Access Manager. This
feature is called Dial on demand.
4. How do I turn on DoD
in Access Manager?
1) To enable Dial-On-Demand, you must edit
the Setup.ini file BEFORE running the Install.
2) In the section under [CustomOptions],
add this line:
InstallDoD=1
3)Default = 0 (false). If during install
you want to provide the user the option to install EnterNet’s Dial-on-Demand
feature, set this value to 1 (true).
Note: Dial-on-Demand does not work with
Netscape Navigator.
5. How do I get my VPN
client to work?
In Access Manager:
1) Go to this folder "C:\Program Files\Sympatico\Access
Manager\app
2) Double click on the "EnterNet Folder.exe" file
3) Click on "Connections" from the tool bar -> Click on
"Settings"
4) Click on "Advanced" -> Choose "DHCP"
6. What VPN clients are
compatible with Access Manager?
Access Manager V1.3 and up are compatible
with the following Windows clients:
Intel/Shiva Shiva VPN IPSec Client * 6.7

Efficient Networks (Formerly NTS) has worked
with each of the above VPN products to confirm their products are compatible
with our Windows EnterNet 1.3 client. Several of these vendors updated
their own software to resolve problems, so you may need to contact them
for the latest version.
* In order for the Intel Shiva client to
work over Access Manager, click the Settings -> Advanced button and
select the IPConfiguration for DHCP (not the default Private API). For
further assistance, request help through your available Intel/Shiva
support channels.
** SecuRemote requires 4.1 build 4118 to
work with Windows 2000/NT. SecuRemote changed the interface in version
4150 and will require a new version of Access Manager, currently undergoing
beta test. Contact Efficient Networks (Formerly NTS) if you require
this.
*** Aventail requires Access Manager version
1.34 or higher. You will also need to exclude the Access Manager application
from the Aventail client to prevent the Access Manager application from
crashing. From the Aventail Advanced tab, click the Modify List button
and add the EnterNet.EXE application to the list.
Note: Will the Access Manager software
work with encryption algorithms other than IPSec?
Access Manager uses FWZ1 which is Checkpoint
native. Checkpoint has changed their software. Support is planned for
V2.0.
7. "Failed to create
device: Efficient Networks (Formerly NTS)PPPoE" error
If you get the error you will have to install
the virtual adapter by hand.
This is done in windows '95/'98 boxes like
this:
Go to your
"Control Panel" then
"Network" then
From the "Configuration Tab", click "Add" then
"Adapter" then
"Select Manufacturer" (or have disk) = Network TeleSystems
-> Network TeleSystems PPPoE Adapter (Efficient Networks (Formerly NTS)P3)
>Click OK, wait for completion, then reboot.
In Windows 2000
"Control Panel" then
" Add/Remove Hardware" then
Choose "other device" then
"Have disk" then
browse to the program files "\Efficient Networks (Formerly NTS)\EnterNet300\bin
directory", where the "Efficient Networks (Formerly NTS)pppoe.inf"
file will be readily recognized.
8. "Dialup adapter not
found in list."
This only happens with Dial-on-Demand set,
but not functioning properly. To turn it off:
1) You must edit the Setup.ini file BEFORE
running the Install.
2) In the section under [CustomOptions],
edit this line:
InstallDoD=1 (change the 1 to 0)
9. How do I get Access
Manager to run as a service and not shut down, when a user log's off?
From Microsoft:
WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly
can cause serious, systemwide problems that may require you to reinstall
the operating system to correct them. Microsoft cannot guarantee that
any problems resulting from the use of Registry Editor can be solved.
Use this tool at your own risk.
To modify the behavior of RAS when logging
off, change the value of the following registry key:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
KeepRasConnections REG_SZ
Range: 0 or 1
Default: 0 (disabled)
You should restart the computer after making
this change.
By default, when logging off, Windows NT
4.0 and Windows 2000 closes all RAS connections opened during the session.
If this registry key value is added and set to 1, the system will not
close RAS connections when logging off. This registry key value does
not appear in the registry unless you add it.
10. "Tap failed
to load" error.
Try this first:
1) Go to this folder "C:\Program Files\Sympatico\Access Manager\app
2) Double click on the "EnterNet Folder.exe" file
3) Click on "Connections" from the tool bar -> Click on "Settings"
4) Click on "Advanced" -> Choose "Protocol Driver"
With Access Manager you should be able
to uninstall A.M.
Then Reboot.
Look for any left over A.M. folders delete them, (found here: C:\Sympatico
High Speed Edition\Access Manager).
Then reboot, and reinstall Access Manager.
That should do the trick.
11. "Server Communication
Failure (or) Time-out while connecting to server" error.
Your Ethernet cable may not connected.
Network Server or service identified in
Properties didn't respond to Discovery Request.
DSL modem or network connection may not
be working.
IP Addresses not exchanged from Server
Driver has been disabled by Automatic Skip Driver Agent on Windows 98.
12. How do I get WinRoute
to work with Access Manager?
WinRoute Pro 4.1 works well with A.M. if
you switch to Protocol Driver from the default Filter Driver.
1) Go to this folder "C:\Program Files\Sympatico\Access
Manager\app
2) Double click on the "EnterNet Folder.exe" file
3) Click on "Connections" from the tool bar -> Click on
"Settings"
4) Click on "Advanced" -> Choose "Protocol Driver"
13. What do I need to
do to get A.M. to work for NT 4?
Upgrade to the newest
version of A.M.
14. Windows NT box freezing
with A.M. / EnterNet.
Your first problem may be
SP6 It has a serious TCP/IP bug. There is a fix, but I've been told
the best thing to do is to go back to SP5. Make sure you uninstall AM,
THEN uninstall SP6, and then reinstall AM.
Your second problem may be DHCP: PPPoE doesn't use DHCP. So here's how
you solve it:
On NT Go to Control Panel->Services
Find the DHCP Client and Disable it

Funny enough this is something that can
be fixed somewhat simply.
You have to open up the ini file within
Access Manager and edit to items, same it and then open Access Manager.
When you open the ini (with EnterNet it's just called EnterNet.ini and
it might be with Access Manager) delete the two lines that talk about
window size:
About half way down you will see this:
[MainWindow Size] Rect=0110 0119 0683 0517 <- Delete this line
About 3 quarters of the way down you will see this:
[Window Size] Rect=0360 0227 0665 0541 <- Delete this line Save the
file and then run Access Manager.

is your password as supplied by your ISP.

Access Managersets a default MTU of 1454.

2) Click the "Advanced" tab -> Click "MaxFrameSize"
change the numerical value from 1454 to 1492
3) Click "OK" -> Click "OK" -> Reboot

in Windows 2000?
1) Right click on "My Network Places"

2) Right click on the icon representing the connection you want to share.
For Access Manager it would be the "Efficient Networks PPPoE Adapter"
