Please note: Many items here now
work for EnterNet 100 V1.31 and above.
Tango Manager has been released. Enhanced
PPPoE software replacing EnterNet which will be phased out over the
next 12 months. Click here.
1. How do
I use Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing (ICS Windows '98) with EnterNet?
Note: These instructions also
apply to the new version of Access
Manager.
1) Install the EnterNet
300 software
Note: Make sure you also
follow the steps for setting up a VPN (question 7), this is also needed
for EnterNet and ICS to coexist.
2) Add the Internet Connection
Sharing (ICS) software on your gateway machine (the computer that will
connect and share your Internet connection to the client systems (other
computers).
3) You do this by clicking "start
-> settings -> control panel ->Add/Remove Programs".
4) Then "windows setup".
5) Under "components tab",
double-click on the "Internet tools" category.
6) Check the "Internet connection
sharing" and click on "OK" to install.
Note: You will need to go
step by step through the Internet sharing setup until it asks the kind
of connection. Choose the option for "cable or dsl".
7) Continue and it will prompt
you for the device. Select the "Network TeleSystems P.P.P.o.E.
Adapter". (If using Access Manager: Select the "Sympatico High
Speed Edition" Adapter.)
8) You will then be prompted to make
a setup disk for the client machines.
9) You will be asked to restart.
10) Install the setup disk on the client machines.
11) On the gateway system, start a connection and then use the ICS application
on the shared systems. You will be updated with new private addresses.
At this point you should be connected.
Note: It has been brought
to my attention that Win98SE ICS has yet another MTU key in the registry
on the gateway that needs to be adjusted in order to allow a PPPoE
to be shared correctly. It is found as follows;
Hkey_Local_Machine\System\ CurrentControlSet\Services\ ICSharing\Settings\
General\InternetMTU
Click here for more info on MTU settings.
The newest release of EnterNet 300 V1.3 (March 11, 2000) adjusts MTU
values to 1454 so MTU adjustments are no longer needed.
Note: I've gotten word
that when using Pacbell DSL with EnterNet 300 and ICS, the second Ethernet
card which connects to your local network can not be a USB Ethernet
card.
2. How do
I use Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing (ICS Windows 2000) with EnterNet?

7) Choose the "Sharing" tab.
8) Check off "Enable Internet Connection Sharing".
9) Click on the drop down arrow in the "For local network:"
box
10) Choose the Ethernet adapter associated with your private network.
Note: This will automatically
assign the address 192.168.0.1 to the private network gateway and
enable DHCP.
11) To use the shared connection, connect
the private network hosts to the Ethernet hub.
Note: Hosts on the private
network should have their TCP/IP set to use DHCP.

3) Check off "Yes, I want to restart"
4) Click "Finish" to reboot
5) Double click "EnterNet" icon on your desktop
6) Double click "Create a new profile"
7) Enter a name for this connection IE: DSL
8) Enter your "User Name" as provided by your ISP. (Note:
you may need to include your ISP's domain as part of your userid. Ex.
For Verizon customers it would be userid@verizon.net).
9) Enter your "Password" as provided by your ISP
10) Click "Next"
11) Click "Next" - Server is found window
12) Click "Finish"
13) Double click on the new connection icon created
14) Click "Connect"
15) Surf Away!
4. What is
new about EnterNet 300 V1.5b?
V1.5b is the newest version
of EnterNet 300.
This release fixes a problem
occurring with some Windows 2000 systems that are unable to browse correctly
upon connection. In some cases the Windows TCP was dropping the negotiated
IP address.
With V1.5b, EnterNet now uses a number of methods to set the IP address:
first, using the private API call with the default enumerator index
to the Ethernet adapter; second, using the 0 index; third, using DHCP.
Note that there is also a problem with Windows 2000 in general that
requires service pack 1 or later for resolution. In all cases, we recommend
that you install the latest Windows 2000 service pack before installing
EnterNet 300 V1.5b for Windows.
The Network parameter in the
Enternet.ini file can be set now when the Username is not present.
The client can now request PAP or CHAP authentication from the server
using the Enternet.ini file. Set the parameters LogonSecurity=1 (for
PAP) or 2 (for CHAP). This parameter can be added under the [Configuration]
section if global for all connections. It can also be added under the
Session section (i.e. [00] for a specific profile). The default is to
accept any authentication mode that the server requests.
Support for the AT&T VPN
client on Win9x systems (except for WinMe). Select the Protocol Driver
from the Advanced Settings. The AT&T VPN client was already supported
on Windows NT and 2000.
Efficient Networks PPPoE adapter was fixed to enable adding from the
Network properties on Windows NT.
EnterNet now sends LCP and PAD Terminate requests after detecting that
the network or modem have stopped responding to LCP Echo requests.
The provider can now force
an uninstall before installing EnterNet. When AllowUpgrade=0 is added
in the [CustomOptions] section of the Setup.ini file, the installer
will not allow users to proceed with an upgrade until they have uninstalled
EnterNet first. The default is to upgrade without uninstalling, keeping
the users parameters saved in the Enternet.ini file. This is usually
only necessary when adding new features in the Enternet.ini file, which
is not copied in an upgrade.
5. What is
the Dial on Demand Feature?
EnterNet 300 is compatible
with the Windows Connection Wizard. This means applications that are
"Internet aware" and are thus able to use Windows Connection Wizard
to establish an on-demand Internet connection will be able to do so
through EnterNet 300. This EnterNet 300 feature is called Dial on demand.
6. How do
I turn on DoD in EnterNet 300 V1.3 and up?
1) To enable Dial-On-Demand,
you must edit the Setup.ini file BEFORE running the Install.
2) In the section under [CustomOptions],
add this line:
InstallDoD=1
3)Default = 0 (false). If
during install you want to provide the user the option to install EnterNet’s
Dial-on-Demand feature, set this value to 1 (true).
Note: Dial-on-Demand does
not work with Netscape Navigator.
7. How do
I get my VPN client to work?
1) Right click on the EnterNet
icon in your Sys tray.
2) Choose "Application Settings"
3) Click the "Advanced"
button - Screen shot
4) Switch from "Private
API" to "DHCP" - Screen shot
In Access Manager:
1) Right click the A.M. icon
in your System tray.
2) Choose "Sympatico Properties"
3) Then choose "Advanced"
4) Switch it from "API"
to "DHCP"
Note: If you install the Cisco
client before installing EnterNet then making these changes to EnterNet
you should be able to get the two to co-exist.You will also need to
use the "Set MTU" utility in the Cisco VPN Dialer program
group. You may need to go as low as 1265
8. What VPN
clients are compatible with EnterNet 300?
EnterNet version 1.3 and up
are compatible with the following Windows clients:
Intel/Shiva Shiva VPN IPSec Client * 6.7
CheckPoint VPN-1 SecuRemote IPSec 4.0**
Nortel Contivity Extranet IPSec Client 2.5
TimeStep PERMIT/Client IPSec > 1.20.004
Microsoft PPTP/L2TP Adapter 95/98/NT/2000
VPNet (requires EnterNet 1.32) VPNRemote 2.51
Aventail Aventail Connect 3.21***
Note: If you install the Cisco
client before installing EnterNet then making these changes to EnterNet
you should be able to get the two to co-exist.
Efficient Networks (Formerly
NTS) has worked with each of the above VPN products to confirm their
products are compatible with our Windows EnterNet 1.3 client. Several
of these vendors updated their own software to resolve problems, so
you may need to contact them for the latest version.
* In order for the Intel Shiva
client to work over EnterNet, click the Settings -> Advanced button
and select the IPConfiguration for DHCP (not the default Private API).
For further assistance, request help through your available Intel/Shiva
support channels.
** SecuRemote requires 4.1
build 4118 to work with Windows 2000/NT. SecuRemote changed the interface
in version 4150 and will require a new version of EnterNet, currently
undergoing beta test. Contact Efficient Networks (Formerly NTS) if you
require this.
*** Aventail requires EnterNet
version 1.34. You will also need to exclude the EnterNet application
from the Aventail client to prevent the EnterNet application from crashing.
From the Aventail Advanced tab, click the Modify List button and add
the EnterNet.EXE application to the list.
Note: Will the EnterNet software
work with encryption algorithms other than IPSec?
EnterNet uses FWZ1 which is
Checkpoint native. Checkpoint has changed their software. Support is
planned for V2.0.
9. "Failed
to create device: Efficient Networks (Formerly NTS)PPPoE" error
If you get the error you will
have to install the virtual adapter by hand.
This is done in windows '95/'98
boxes like this:
Go to your
"Control Panel" then
"Network" then
From the "Configuration Tab", click "Add" then
"Adapter" then
"Select Manufacturer" (or have disk) = Network TeleSystems
-> Network TeleSystems PPPoE Adapter (Efficient Networks (Formerly NTS)P3)
->Click OK, wait for completion, then reboot.
In Windows 2000
"Control Panel" then
" Add/Remove Hardware" then
Choose "other device" then
"Have disk" then
browse to the program files "\Efficient Networks (Formerly NTS)\EnterNet300\bin
directory", where the "Efficient Networks (Formerly NTS)pppoe.inf"
file will be readily recognized.
10. How
do I buy a single license of EnterNet 300?
Click
here to purchase EnterNet
11. Looking
in the Message Log I found "AddChangeRouteAPI - Error [87] From Add
Route.".
This has been corrected in
Version 1.34 and up. If you get an error 87 from the API, EnterNet winexec
the route add and does it that way. Ignore it. Don't try to look for
errors there if you can help it.
12. EnterNet
now inserts 1454 as the MTU does it also insert a value for the MSTCP
DefaultRcvWindow.
Yes. It's in the Adapter properties,
Maxframesize. But it is not used to negotiate MTU size like you'd think.
It is used to tell Microsoft's TCP to set the TCP MaxSegmentsize (to
1414). Same is done for NT. Don't get it confused with the TCP RcvWindowSize,
EnterNet does not modify this.
13. "Dialup
adapter not found in list."
This only happens with Dial-on-Demand
set, but not functioning properly. To turn it off:
1) You must edit the Setup.ini
file BEFORE running the Install.
2) In the section under [CustomOptions],
edit this line:
InstallDoD=1 (change the 1
to 0)
14. How
do I get EnterNet to run as a service and not shut down, when a user log's
off?
From Microsoft:
WARNING: Using Registry Editor
incorrectly can cause serious, system-wide problems that may require
you to reinstall the operating system to correct them. Microsoft cannot
guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of Registry Editor
can be solved. Use this tool at your own risk.
To modify the behavior of
RAS when logging off, change the value of the following registry key:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
KeepRasConnections REG_SZ
Range: 0 or 1
Default: 0 (disabled)
You should restart the computer
after making this change.
By default, when logging off,
Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 closes all RAS connections opened during
the session. If this registry key value is added and set to 1, the system
will not close RAS connections when logging off. This registry key value
does not appear in the registry unless you add it.
Update: The above information
does not work for everyone. If it does not work for you try this:
Uncheck "Allow to interact with desktop" in the PPPoE servicep
properties, setup the connection to auto connect and check load EnterNet
subsevice when PPPoE service loads
15. "Tap
failed to load" error.
Upgrade to at least V1.34
version will alleviate some cases of this error.
This has been discovered with
some PCI based Ethernet adapters which fail to identify to the Efficient
Networks (Formerly NTS) Tap driver. Try installing an ISA Ethernet adapter
to get around this problem.
In some cases this may help:
click Connections Menu -> Settings -> Advanced button and change the
Network Access mode from the default Filter Driver to Protocol Driver.
With EnterNet you should be
able to uninstall EnterNet.
Then Reboot.
Look for any left over Efficient Networks (Formerly NTS) folders delete
them, (found here: C:\Program Files\Efficient Networks (Formerly NTS)).
Then reboot, and reinstall EnterNet.
That should do the trick.
With Access Manager you should
be able to uninstall A.M.
Then Reboot.
Look for any left over A.M. folders delete them, (found here: C:\Sympatico
High Speed Edition\Access Manager).
Then reboot, and reinstall Access Manager.
That should do the trick.
